This week in Y5, we have started reading The Pirate Queen by Terry Deary. We defined key vocabulary in our text, such as 'cog' and 'galley', to help us understand what it means to be a pirate in the Tudor era. Y5 were also able to find interesting adjectives to help describe Captain Grace O'Malley. We used these adjectives in our character description for a wanted poster. We also included relative clauses in our description to uplevel our writing. Using teabags, we finished off our wanted posters with an old "timey" look.
In Maths, we have started looking at equivalent fractions. We are using our knowledge of the times tables and common factors to help us find and recognise these fractions.
In Science, we have completed our unit on forces by looking at gears, pulleys and levers. We understood how these mechanisms are useful for lifting heavy objects, changing its direction of movement, in order to make things easier for us.
In History, we have completed our unit on the tremendous Tudors. We looked at the different crimes and punishments that existed and identified which characters committed a certain crime and what their punishments looked like.
