Nature's Menu: The Fascinating Diets of Animals! 🥩🌱

Date: 23rd May 2024 @ 12:00pm

This term, Year 1 have embarked on an exciting journey through the animal kingdom! Our young explorers have been learning about different types of animals and their diets, focusing on carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

The children started by learning about the characteristics that distinguish these groups of animals. They discovered that:

  • Carnivores eat mostly meat
  • Herbivores eat mostly plants
  • Omnivores eat both plants and meat

During an exciting science lesson, the children made predictions about what different animals might eat. They were then given the opportunity to test their hypotheses through a hands-on investigation involving “animal poo” which was ‘kindly’ left in our classroom by a few unwelcome guests.

The children, quickly put on their investigation hats and got straight to work to determine which type of animal each sample belonged to, based on the contents. By the end of the activity, the children were able to confidently identify whether an animal is a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore based on its diet.

We have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the different animals and their lifestyles this term.

*Please note: “animal poo” was made from household ingredients such as oats, cocoa powder, plain flour & salt. *
